The David DeHaven Alpine Ski Scholarship was established in 1996 by friends and family in memory of David DeHaven, a 1988 graduate of Brighton High School who died in an accident at the age of 26.
An avid skier who became an outstanding racer as a result of his hard work and dedication to the sport, David raced with the Brighton High School Alpine Ski Team for four years. He also competed in the High School State Championships, Winter Empire State Games, and many USSA races. In his memory, the David DeHaven Alpine Ski Scholarship funds training in ski racing for a student who meets established criteria of scholarship, character, and dedication to the sport. Since its inception, the David DeHaven Alpine Ski Scholarship has sent a number of Brighton ski team members to specialized training programs. Several students have attended the summer race camps at Mt. Hood in Oregon, sponsored by the New York Ski Educational Foundation. Others have worked on their skills locally at the annual three-day Bristol Mountain Christmas Ski Camp. The Scholarship has also equipped the ski team with a portable kit for waxing skis on-site during competitions. Click here to learn more about applying for the David DeHaven Alpine Ski Scholarship.
